The National Museum of Zadar started in 1832. It was the first area museum of a general type (Museo Nazionale) which showcased items ranging from natural science objects, antiques, national and industrial art. Today the departments of the National Museum act independently because of the large number of different items.

The departments include: The Exhibition Pavilion City Lounge, City Guard – The Ethnology Department, Department of Museum of Zadar, Nature Department, The Prince Palace, Gallery of Art, and the County Ethnographic collection Veli Iž and the cultural-historical collection Mali Iž. Within the National Museum you can see exhibitions of other institutions, as well as technical and scientific gatherings, cultural manifestations, concerts, book promotions and the like. Depending on the visitor category, the ticket prices vary from 5 to 20 kuna.
